How to Treat Bad Mouth Odor and Have Fresh Breath

 



If you are battling with a bad mouth odor, there are simple oral hygiene to adhere to in order to improve your breath and keep your gums and teeth healthy at the same time.


1. Mouth rinses and toothpaste: If your bad breath is due to bacteria buildup on your teeth, your dentist will recommend a mouth rinse and toothpaste that will kill the bacteria. Some toothpaste contains an antibacterial agent that kills the bacteria-causing mouth odor.



2. Brush your teeth after eating: Brush at least twice every day with fluoride-containing toothpaste especially after eating. Toothpaste with antibacterial properties is known to reduce bad mouth odor.



3. Brush your tongue: The tongue harbors bacteria so brushing the tongue regularly will help reduce odor. People with coated tongues from bacteria overgrowth got from smoking will benefit from using a tongue scraper.



4. Clean your dentures and dental appliances: If you wear a denture, ensure it is cleaned thoroughly at least once a day or as directed by a dentist. If you use a dental retainer or mouth guard, clean them every time before you put them in your mouth.



5. Avoid dry mouth: Always ensure your mouth is moist by drinking plenty of water and not coffee, soft drinks, or alcohol which will lead to a dry mouth. Also, avoid tobacco as it dries the mouth. You can also chew gum or suck on sweets/candy to stimulate saliva.



6. Adjust your diet: Do not eat foods that cause bad breath like garlic, onions, or ginger. Eating a lot of sugary foods also causes bad breath.



7. Change your toothbrush regularly: When your toothbrush becomes frayed, change it. This can be done within every 3-4 months. Also, pick a toothbrush that is soft-bristled.



8. Regular dental checkup: Visit your dentist regularly for checkups for denture cleanups and proper dental examination.
